Packing for a surprise trip can sometimes be so difficult, especially if you don’t know where you’re going. If the brief is ‘hot’, ‘casual’ but with a hint of ‘party’ for that special night out (like my birthday), then we know to bring a swimsuit (a few), maxi’s and a cool pant/top combo. That will always be enough. Us girls like options, so doubling up on outfits is always a good idea. So on a recent trip to Marrakech, I already knew what I was going to take.

Poolside in Marrakech is seriously chilled. If you’re not exploring the city, your days can be spent reading, drinking Pina Colada’s and topping up your tan, so you may want something fuss-free that’s well cut and makes you feel that little more confident. Hello, you are ‘barely covered’ after all. For something to throw over your suit or something to pop on when you’re showered and ready for lunch, Ann Summers have some great cover ups, like this black one below.
Dining in Morocco is spectacular. Renowned for sensational spices and smells, what’s not so obvious is the competition each Moroccan restaurant has with one another. When tourism accounts for almost double Marrakech’s population in a year, it’s no surprise that they’ve got their eye on you; a high tipping customer looking for meal lasting a pretty lengthy duration (often drinks, sunset and food then more drinks). If a waist expanding menu isn’t your cup of tea, (often around six courses) then ask the waiter if you can veer away from the menu and have just the one course. Lamb and couscous is a favourite but as for the heavy flavoured sweet tagines, I’m not a huge fan of. Culturally, Moroccan tea is drank as often as English tea is over here in the UK, so expect lots of it on arrival in your hotel and after dinner in the evening. ‘Grey wine’ is an absolute must-try and for those looking for something authentic (tick), with tremendous views (tick), good wine and service (tick, tick), head to Riad Kniza in the old town. As it’s five star luxury it’s not cheap but totally worth it and hey, if it’s good enough for Will Smith…

Turning 30 is no mean feat so I wanted a dress that was on the higher side of a price range, embellished and something that created a lovely feminine silhouette. Cristallini targets those on the red carpet, creating exquisite gowns and cocktail dresses worthy of any fashion magazine – many celebrities around the world have been pictured in Cristallini dresses. So when I saw this black dress with its sweetheart neckline and a wrap over skirt with a cool split up the one side I knew I needed it. At first I was going to pair with some sky high black heels and massive chandelier earrings but at the last minute opted for gold heels and a clutch, hair suitably combed back into a low pony tail. At £442, this Cristallini dress would be a huge investment for most so what’s amazing is that the dress is available to hire from online rental company, Chic By Choice. Dresses are up to an incredible 85% off retail price so no need to save up for months and months and guilt after spending is eliminated. They’re straight from the catwalk too so you know they’re not going to be old season. With a selection from over 40 designers, their site is well worth a look.
For my birthday dinner, Dan had pre booked the insane ‘Bo & Zin‘ for a night of cocktails, dinner, birthday cake, cigars and dancing. It’s an intelligent fusion of Thai, Japanese and Moroccon with some the of the most delicious desserts I have ever had. Arriving around 8pm I thought we had missed the party as we were the only ones there (and Richard and Judy who turned out to be… Not Richard and Judy – my eyesight!). But after chatting to our waiter it turns out that guests arrive much later for dinner in Marrkech’s new town. True to his word, half hour later the restaurant was buzzing. The best music (you get to keep the CD afterwards), the most delicious food and best of all, the most incredible cocktails and atmosphere. This place needs to be on everyone’s bucket list. Seriously.
